Why is the literary magazine an important endeavor? It's an important endeavor because if no one is producing literary magazine's then I think there's a lack of creativity in the population. People need the creative outlet to submit things to literary magazines. They need something to have some kind of proof that their work is important, in their eyes.
What is the value of the little magazine in your view?
The value is priceless. You can't put a number value on something so beneficial to the community. I think it's a great way to express concerns and topics that may be taboo in the community and address it in a creative way. Also it can help those who need a little push to put their work out in the publishing world. Maybe they were scared at first about publishing anything but now that they have been published, they can feel better about their work.
How do your views compare to those expressed by Bixler?
Well the Control part of his essay is... very sexist. I definitely did not agree with the "The editors must be strong men, knowing their own minds and their own policy." But other wise I didn't have many glaring objections throughout the text.

What do you want to contribute to the Toyon team this semester? I want to bring a different element to the Toyon team. I think that the visual art section can be over looked sometimes in a literary magazine, since it is mostly about writing. I want to show the creations of our students and other people who submit because I think that if they get this exposure then it'll make them feel good about what they've done and continue to create.
What do you hope to accomplish individually and collectively?
I hope that we as a collective can produce a really awesome magazine and get people to know about it. I think that not a lot of people know about the Toyon and it makes me sad that it's unknown to the students of our school.
As part of the Visual Arts and Layout team we plan on getting posters up soon, within the week. We hope to have the cover picked by mid to late October and same with the submissions. That is all we've discussed.

Going to the Humboldt room was super cool. I really like looking at the old editions of the Toyon. My favorite is definitely 1971. The art integration was so cool and I thought it made the entire magazine cohesive. I think that if we can, we should totally do that. Like the categorization of everything is nice, but I think making everything feel like one big piece of art and word would be so cool.

This past week for Toyon I tabled on Tuesday and Thursday almost completely by myself. The people that were scheduled to help out either never showed or were late by like my entire shift and then some. Thankfully I had some help (Marina on Tuesday and Grace on Thursday) because I don't think I would have been able to do it all alone. I am very grateful for the help I had and I found the experience to be fun and a nice change in my daily work, but I really would have liked to have help from the people who were scheduled to help me out.

The review process has been interesting. Trying to make sure that all the submissions are within the guidelines is pretty easy. But judging the submissions is hard. There are some that are clearly not the best and some that are amazing, but it also feels weird to put my opinion on what I think is good and bad writing. But I guess this is good practice for when I become a teacher and grade students papers.

This week I did my evaluations of poetry, which I thought was really interesting and I had fun reading all the poems.

Well for Popshot I thought it was eye catching and super cool to look at. It caught my eye instantly and that's why I like it. The Yale Literary Magazine is pretty and I think because of the design of the cover is why I like it, it's very streamlined and only uses three colors which contrasts to the Popshot one. The last one is just so weird that it would make me want to pick it up off of a bookshelf and find out what it is. The bright colors and the weird bird on the front cover draws me in.

I haven't really done anything for the research project yet, I have been so crazy busy this month I have been putting Toyon on the back burner mostly because my grades are slipping in other classes so I feel like I need to focus on those classes a little more right now and I'll eventually get to the research project.

I think people need to make sure that there are no spelling or grammar errors before they submit something, which I feel like as a writer, that should be ingrained into what you do. I also think that you should look at the literary magazine's past works and see if your piece fits in with it. Especially if it's themed, you should really look at your piece and ask yourself if you think it would fit in well with their body of work. I know as a visual art editor it really came down to what we thought would be cohesive as a body of work and if we thought the artists put a lot of effort into it. There were some pictures that were just... meh. They weren't exciting, and they didn't go with the rest of the art pieces.

I honestly don't see how editing might play a role in my career. I want to be a high school English teacher. I technically will be editing student's papers, but not in the editing way of literary magazines and things we've learned this semester. I get that some things I learned this semester will be helpful in later classes, but having a portfolio online, I just don't see as an advantage for me, because for my career they're just looking for experience and having a portfolio won't show them that I have experience with kids. I can tweak it around to help me, but I'm not very enthused about this portfolio. I might make a new one before I start my job search to really customize it to work for me.
